The area of a spherical region can be easily measured by considering which sampling points of a lattice are located inside or outside the region. This point-counting technique is frequently used for measuring the Earth coverage of satellite constellations, employing a latitude-longitude lattice. This paper analyzes the numerical errors of such measurements, and shows that they could be greatly reduced if the Fibonacci lattice were used instead. The latter is a mathematical idealization of...

This view of the back side of the Moon was captured by the Apollo 16 mission crew. The sixth manned lunar landing mission, the Apollo 16 (SA-511), carrying three astronauts: Mission Commander John W. Young, Command Module pilot Thomas K. Mattingly II, and Lunar Module pilot Charles M. Duke, lifted off on April 16, 1972. The Apollo 16 continued the broad-scale geological, geochemical, and geophysical mapping of the Moon?s crust, begun by the Apollo 15, from lunar orbit. This mission marked the...

The Gemini 11 spacecraft is lowered onto a dolly for preflight maintenance before stacking on the Titan rocket at the Kennedy Space Center. Dick Gordon and Pete Conrad would liftoff in this spacecraft on September 12, 1966 for a mission lasting almost three days. The crew practiced docking with the Agena unmanned docking craft, and Gordon also performed two spacewalks during the mission.

Galactic and non-galactic components of the diffuse H-alpha and H-beta night sky emissions were resolved with a Fabry-Perot spectrometer. The non-galactic component of both lines accounts for most of the emission at galactic latitudes greater than 30 deg. The intensities of the galactic component yield values for the average ionization rate per hydrogen atom that are between 10 to the minus 15th power and 10 to the minus 14th power s sup minus 1 assuming steady state ionization.

In the past 40 years, thousands of objects have been placed in Earth orbit and are being tracked. Space hardware reentry survivability must be evaluated to assess risks to human life and property on the ground. The objective of this paper is to present results of a study to determine altitude of demise (burn-up) or survivability of reentering objects. Two NASA/JSC computer codes - Object Reentry Survival Analysis Tool (ORSAT) and Miniature ORSAT (MORSAT) were used to determine trajectories,...

The success of space endeavors depends upon a space environment sufficiently free of debris to enable the safe and dependable operation of spacecraft. An environment overly cluttered with debris would threaten the ability to utilize space for a wide variety of scientific, technological, military, and commercial purposes. Man made space debris (orbital debris) differs from natural meteoroids because it remains in earth orbit during its lifetime and is not transient through the space around the...
